BY JENNIFER CHEN

AS LONG AS I CAN SEE / BROKE ROYALS

AS LONG AS I CAN SEE / BROKE ROYALS

Since early 2014, Philip Basnight and Colin Cross have been creating unique and meaningful music together. What started as a small-scale music partnership changed when Thailand’s citizens heard their song About Time during a time when a military coup overcame them. This is when Broke Royals found that their music could and was positively affecting people all over the world.

If you want to hear a catchy and upbeat song, their new single As Long as I Can See is the one for you. With a vibe that just makes you want to dance, it is uplifting, positive and you’ll definitely have it on repeat.

As you listen to the lyrics though, the song holds a whole other mood that just adds to the feel-good, hopeful, and comforting vibe that all of Broke Royal’s music possesses.

This DC-based duo is the next big thing; whose music is bound to lift the spirits of people everywhere.

'BEHIND THE WALL' / BARE TEETH: MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW

BY KAT VISTI

French punk rock band Bare Teeth released an EP entitled First the Town, Then the World on May 19, 2017 (You can read our interview with them here). On September 15th the band released a music video for their acoustic single entitled Behind the Wall. The song was written some time ago and the inspiration came through different countries and events. While touring central and eastern Europe, band member Greg experienced first hand how people who had little had so much to give and provide regardless of what they had. It also came from the Berlin Wall and The Iron Curtain. Both divided people because of opposing ideologies however people reunited through music. In the music video for the song, the band is in an intimate setting with just the band members and their instruments. The music video is in black and white and that adds to the emotion. If you're into punk rock and songs that have meaning, Bare Teeth is the perfect band for you.

SOMAYA: INTERVIEW

INTRO BY MADDEN LEVIN

INTERVIEW BY CAMI LIBERTY

STAND UP / SOMAYA

STAND UP / SOMAYA

Like many artists, Somaya started writing music to cope with difficult times in her life. But what makes her unique is the sound that is produced from that therapeutic time. Her newest single, Stand Up, is no exception. In our exclusive interview with Somaya, we discuss the writing process of the song and what the true meaning is. Make sure to catch up with her on all of her social medias, @somayamusic!

What made you want to get your start in music?

SOMAYA: "When I was 13, I started to go through a difficult time, and music helped me feel better. Writing music was very therapeutic for me, so I figured if I could make a career out of helping myself and others through music, that would be amazing!"

What is your writing process like?

SOMAYA: "I tend to start with words first. I’m someone who’s very lyric oriented. Any time I think of a line I could use for a song, I write it down on my phone, and then whenever I sit down to actually write a song, I start with one of those lines. On average, it takes me 20-25 minutes to write a song. If it takes me more than half an hour to write one, odds are it isn’t going to be a very good one!"

What do you find inspires you the most when creating music – people, nature, etc.?

SOMAYA: "Most of my songs are written based on my own life experiences. But outside of that, watching emotional tv shows/movies motivates me to write a lot. A teacher of mine once told me that listening to a really good song makes you want to create music too, and I definitely think that holds true as well."

Your recently released single Stand Up has an extremely powerful message – can you tell us a little about the song and the process on creating it?

SOMAYA: "The song is about standing up against sexual assault. I wrote it last October in about 15-20 minutes! I had actually already written another song about sexual assault, but it was much more personal and sad, so I decided to move forward with Stand Up because it felt more empowering to me. Sexual assault is a very big issue that isn’t always taken as seriously as it should be, so this song is my way of raising more awareness and letting victims know they’re not alone."

If you could collaborate with anybody, who would it be and why?

SOMAYA: "Ooh that’s a tough one! There are a lot of really talented people I’d love to work with, but I’ll go with Ed Sheeran! He has a beautiful voice and I consider him to be one of the best songwriters of our time, so it would be awesome to collaborate with him."

Is there anything we can expect from you in the near future?

SOMAYA: "I’m constantly writing, so look out for new songs! I also sometimes post snippets of songs on social media, so be sure to follow @somayamusic on Instagram and Twitter!"

'KEEP THE COFFINS COMING' / FRANK IERO AND THE PATIENCE: ALBUM REVIEW

BY KRISTINA KOZLITINA

KEEP THE COFFINS COMING / FRANK IERO AND THE PATIENCE

KEEP THE COFFINS COMING / FRANK IERO AND THE PATIENCE

Full of passionate vocals and unruly guitar riffs, Frank Iero and the Patience’s new EP, Keep the Coffins Coming has finally been released—deemed the long-awaited missing link between Stomachaches and Parachutes (their debut and sophomore albums, respectively). The EP is weaved with powerful emotion—from the intense I’m a Mess, to the sentimental You Are My Sunshine. Former guitarist and backing vocalist of My Chemical Romance, Frank Iero proves yet again the strength and uniqueness of his independent sound. Created with the help of renowned Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey), the songs on the recorded EP are perhaps the band’s most unflinching yet. Angsty vocals met with hardcore punk guitar and cacophonous beats permeate throughout. The only thing Keep The Coffins Coming is missing, at least for the diehard fans who’ve been awaiting its release, is more—more songs, more albums, more of Frank Iero and the Patience.
