With their latest single, “Awkward,” Sleep State is a upbeat rock band from Orange County. The band was founded back in 2013 with Troy Ritchie (guitar/lead vocals) and Michael Haua (keyboard/vocals). Soon enough, the duo became a trio with drummer Parker Jackson. Sleep State is currently growing their fan base on the daily, and their music is found featured on KCRW, MTV’s Teen Mom 2, ABC’s Nashville, and CBS’s Bull

How/when did you all first come together to create the band?

"Michael (keyboardist) and Troy (vocalist/guitarist) met in a beginning guitar class senior year of high school. They began collaborating under an assortment of band names and lineup changes. Eventually establishing Sleep State, they fine-tuned the sound and steered the project in a more electronic direction. In 2013, Troy and Michael began performing at local restaurants, bars, and small venues as a duo. After a gig the following year, the two were approached by Parker Jackson (drums) who expressed interest in collaborating. It didn’t take long before Sleep State traded in a drum machine for live percussion, and the duo grew into a trio. With an official lineup established, the band set out to find a producer who would resonate with their vibe and vision. They found one in Adrian Alvarado, known for his work with Act As If and Secrets."

In your own words, how would you describe your music?

"Motown inspired vocals, melodies, and bass/guitar riffs, accompanied by modern production and synthesizers. Our songs have an upbeat and danceable vibe, with lyrics that cover a wide range of topics from social anxiety to foxy ladies."

You recently released your new single "Awkward." Can you tell us a little about the song and the inspiration behind it?

“'Awkward' is a single that evokes the sense of social anxiety that largely characterized my (Troy) experience in high school. Primarily about a girl whom I, admittedly, don't know very well but nonetheless place on a pedestal, the lyrics are relatable to anyone who recalls adolescence as a time of petty drama or isolation. While derived from real-life experiences, the girl in “Awkward” symbolizes a phase in my development as a person, rather than representing any one person or relationship. I utilize hyperbole with stark realism to demonstrate how the smallest blunder was cause for enormous embarrassment. The track reaches its climax with a watershed moment that sees me come to the epiphany that adhering to social pressures or overly concerning oneself with the opinions of other is not only exhausting, but also a counterproductive waste of time and energy. I hope listeners take the song as an invitation to liberate themselves from the shackles of self-consciousness and the unhealthy focus our society puts on the individual to be popular or like-able."

Within the last two years, your songs have been heard on ABC’s Nashville, MTV’s Teen Mom 2, CBS’s Bull, and more. How did it feel when you found out your songs had reached this amount of success?

"It felt surreal to hear our music play on such popular television shows. That was definitely the first time any of us had ever watched Teen Mom, but we found ourselves surprisingly entertained. We almost got sucked into the reality T.V. trap...almost."

You also will soon be releasing another single entitled "Disco Destiny." What can you tell us about this song and what we can expect from it?

"'Disco Destiny' is a song that was inspired by a moment when an old roommate and I (Troy) were trying to put up a Disco ball in our old place. We were determined to set up this thing and keep it on all day. After a fair amount of trial and error, we finally found this chandelier hook that was perfect for our dance floor wonder. Right when we got the ball turning, we had Bee Gees blaring and I proclaimed, 'We got a date with Disco Destiny.' The song is a very funky, dance vibe that isn't truly a Disco song, but still has been getting the crowd moving at our shows. We're really excited to share our appreciation for the funk bands of the past."

Aside from "Disco Destiny," is there anything else that we can expect from you in the near future?

"Aside from 'Awkward' and 'Disco Destiny,' we plan to release a number of singles in 2018. We have an arsenal of songs that we are very proud of and can’t wait to share. At this point, it’s a matter of laying them down in the studio and finalizing production. We’re aiming to book multiple live sessions and shows in southern California to support each release."

LEADR: INTERVIEW

INTRO BY MADDEN LEVIN

INTERVIEW BY CAMI LIBERTY

Describing his music as “translucent melodic waves that beat” is only one amazing thing about musician and fashion lord, LEADR. In our exclusive interview with this incredible artist, we learned some interesting things, like when he first realized that music was an interest of his and how he incorporates fashion into the melodic waves! To find out more, read below and be sure to check out LEADR on all of his social media accounts for updates on new music and news!

When was the moment that you first realized that you wanted to be a musician?

"If you ask my 8 year old self what my dreams were, being a musician was my dream. I remember my mother bought me a Playskool cassette recorder with a microphone. I would put on the radio and sing along. I wish I still had those cassette tapes!"

How would you describe your music in your own words?

"Translucent melodic waves that beat."

What does fashion mean to you?

"Fashion plus beauty has always been a part of my creative process. It helps express my individuality and it enhances my performances."

How do you incorporate your fashion into your music style/process?

"I like to write about positive life experiences and I want to inspire people. When I think of of these emotions, I see the color white. I incorporate the color white in my style. White to me evokes new beginnings, simplicity and infinite imagination."

You just released your debut single Waves. Can you tell us a little about the song and how you chose to have it as your first single?

"I created the production in NYC and wrote the track in LA. I was inspired by the waves of change. The energy of LA was what brought me here. It’s catchy and sonically, it felt good. I’m all about feeling."

You also released a music video to go along with the song. How did you make sure that the visuals really brought the song to life?

"I had a meeting with my friend and super talented film director of 'Waves', Margo Victor. She came up with the idea to present myself in the most minimal and abstract way. She referenced one of PJ Harvey’s music videos. I thought it was cool how her productions were so stripped and more focused on her performance. I came up with the idea to have dancers in the video to represent changes in my life and the choreography had a sense of flow like my lyric, 'Let it flow through you.' Also, I would like to thank James Dii, Los Angeles Fashion Designer, for hand crafting all the beautiful pieces in my video."

Do you have any long-term goals for yourself and your music?

"Inspire people musically, focusing on making more music, tour around the world, and maybe create my own empire like Jay-Z. Haha!"

Is there anything else that we can expect from you in the near future?

"My second single is coming out very soon and I can’t wait to perform my music live. I’m really excited about that!"

'BRICK BY BRICK' / THE SOFT WHITE SIXTIES: MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW

BY TAMARA CHAPMAN

The Soft White Sixties are back with another heart throbbing hit. “Brick by Brick” is a brave take on the political issues in our modern-day society. The video depicts everything we stand for as a community versus what is being engraved into our thoughts. The Soft White Sixties successfully took on the concept of addressing something as serious at the political aspects of our surrounding while comparing it to the everyday TV shows that we know and love.

The music video hits hard from start to finish. "Brick by Brick" refers to the wall that is constantly threatening to be built to keep specific groups of people outside of the United States. “Who are the people of America?” -- This opening message manages to linger in your mind throughout the duration of the video. Bloopers from the Channel 60 News begins to flash in and out while a background message promoting the equality and acceptance of everyone begins to overflow the silence. The music video has a vintage and a retro feel. The theme blends right in with the 70’s. This is such a brilliant tactic for addressing the sensitive subject of politics.

These scenes quickly transition into what seems like a lyric video, except the lyrics are stylized in the form of the hit TV show, The Price is Right. Between the lyrics and the accompaniment of the bands voices that intertwine together in unison, the video continuously gets better. “This is the land of the free” -- These words and their soft tones are the perfect pair. It is safe to say that The Soft White Sixties stand in solidarity for those who want to see change in the world.

Verse by verse, voice by voice, brick by brick. This track in addition to the video is just the beginning of a wonderful musical journey for The Soft White Sixties. If you’re interested in even more fascinating tunes that The Sixties have to offer, you can catch them on tour this spring, with support from Public Access TV.

'WINGS' / THE JACKS: SINGLE REVIEW

BY EMMA SCHOORS

Rock n’ roll band The Jacks’ new single “Wings” brings classic bass lines to crisp guitars and vintage vocals, for a song that keeps you coming back for more. The band is true to their music and the integrity-based foundation they’ve built themselves on. The track delivers timeless sound and modern interest. The verses are a mix of dark and light, blending the greatness of all instruments used in one rather than focusing on one of them. The harmonies create a beautiful centerpiece for the lead vocals. The drums and bass keep the song in check with perfectly timed beats, feeling out and motivating one another rather than competing against each other. The coordination of the song is seemingly effortless in style and genre, yet it leaves you wanting to incorporate just as many great essences of music into one song yourself. The inspirations are easy to get lost in on this one. It’s more than just a three minute jam, it’s something to keep in mind while this band rises to the top. Find The Jacks’ music and media below, and catch them at the Troubadour in Hollywood on February 14th.
