'THUNDERBOLT' / SAXON: ALBUM REVIEW

BY JAMIE LANGLEY

If you haven’t heard of Saxon yet, I hope after reading this that you’ll have the nerve to check them out. Saxon are a pounding heavy metal band hailing from the depths of South Yorkshire, UK and they have been hastily making a name for themselves for over 41 legendary years now. Among other things, they been referred to as one of the most iconic metal acts of their time, influencing many of the other big-name metal lords. If you happen to be lucky enough to stand amongst them at their show, you’ll experience a powerhouse of emotion and sheer artistry.

Their brand new, gripping album, titled “Thunderbolt”, is fast to strike you with crazy fast-paced riffs, echoing vocals and menacing solos performed by uber-talented musicians. This new work brings back the raw electricity of metal from years before, hard and pressing, searching for a soul to rock and possess. If you don’t classify yourself a metal head but you catch yourself head banging to this record, don’t be surprised or alarmed, it’s bound to happen.

You can hear barbaric growls and grunts throughout this masterpiece bound with heavy hitting guitars and punishing drums. This would be a hard record to sit down and compare to other coveted acts, it basically stands alone in its awe. Not only did “Thunderbolt” rank in the Billboard charts the very first week it was released, the band also announced that they would be embarking on a two part, two county tour with legends like Judas Priest, Black Star Riders, Diamond Head and Rock Goddess.

If you have gazed upon any of the visuals for the band’s new album, you’ll see gritty and grungy imagery, working perfectly with their sound. My personal favorite is the video for “Nosferatu, The Vampire’s Waltz”, it brings you classic graphics of old lore and gore, embracing the music it resides by. You really never can be disappointed by heavy metal and the visuals or sounds being produced through the ages, it seems that heavy metal is difficult to corrupt.

When listening to the full album, one can truly appreciate Saxon’s lead singer Biff Byford’s ever present sound that is seemingly never wavering, not even for a split second. Classic heavy metal has never been more blistering and long withstanding than with the likes of Saxon, I believe. If you were to give this record a solid listen and tune into the underworld of tunes they bring, I would recommend these select songs of the record, as I feel they served the heaviest punch of all:

1) Nosferatu, The Vampire’s Waltz (of course, how could I not?!)

2) Predator (it’s hard hitting to the max)

3) Speed Merchants (very high paced and satisfying to any ear)

LAURA JEAN ANDERSON: INTERVIEW

BY ANDREA HOFFMAN

Laura Jean Anderson is a Washington-born musician currently living and performing in Los Angeles. Her music draws from classic Americana artists and mixes with elements of elegant modernism to create a dramatic sound that can be heard in her newest single “Silence Won’t Help Me Now.” We were able to learn more about her musical inspirations as well as her plans for the coming future. Be sure to check out her next headlining show in Los Angeles at the Moroccan Lounge, April 19th!

Your new single "Silence Won’t Help Me Now" just recently dropped, can you tell me what it’s about and where the inspiration for it came from?

LAURA: "In a nutshell, it's about feelings of repression and falling subject to people wanting me to be someone I'm not, and the power I felt making the choice to finally speak my truth. When I first wrote it I thought this was one of those songs that I wrote for me to sing alone in my room to give me the power I needed to say what I want to say. But then I thought about how the last thing the world needs right now is to stay silent about our truth."

Who are some of your inspirations when it comes to music and what have you been listening to lately?

LAURA: "My inspiration usually just comes from life itself, but I'm also a deep lover of music, especially early American rock ’n' roll and roots music. Nina Simone, Elvis and Lil' Johnson are three of my heroes that I draw a lot of inspiration from."

I read somewhere that you took a year off of school to travel in South America and I think this is something that can be so beneficial for creatives. Can you tell me about that experience and how it influenced you as an artist?

LAURA: "I think traveling always stirs a different creative energy that can't compare to staying stagnant in one place. Every time I travel, my mind goes places it hasn't gone before. That particular trip and other experiences in life have made me realize how there's nothing else I'd rather do than make music and tell stories through them."

I love the aesthetic of your social media and the visuals for the single! How do you translate your music into these visuals and what do they say about you as an artist?

LAURA: "Haha wow thank you! That's a first. :) As you can tell, I'm quite stuck on the color yellow which has a huge meaning for this record. I fell into a dream a few years back where I crawled out of a rabbit hole onto the top of a mountain filled with golden, yellow orbs and my present self was holding hands with my childhood self and my elderly self. Everything was yellow and it seemed to represent every emotion I have gone and will go through. This new record I made came out of that feeling in that dream— of diving deep into each of these emotions I've felt in my life within each song. So it seemed fitting to present it as yellow."

What are some of your plans for the future? Any new music or shows we can look forward to?

LAURA: "Definitely! This year will be full of new music! A music video coming soon as well and I'll be playing April 19th at the Moroccan Lounge."

MAX FROST: INTERVIEW

INTRO BY TAMARA CHAPMAN

INTERVIEW BY CAMI LIBERTY

Previously featured in one of the largest Pepsi campaigns to date and featured in a NY Times spread, Max Frost has an endless amount of success coming his way. Produced by Fitz of Fitz and the Tantrums, Frost has an upcoming album set to drop this summer. Read more in our interview to learn about his success thus far and his plans to work with legendary artists like DJ Mustard and Elton John!

You recently released your new single ‘Good Morning’ – can you tell us a little about the song and the process creating it?

"Good Morning was sort of the 'breakthrough' track for this record. I decided when I moved to LA from Austin last year that I wanted to completely change my style and create music that felt brighter and more open. I made Good Morning the first day I woke up in LA. It was the start of a new life for me. It was a rebirth."

You also released a music video to go with the song! What was it like filming it? Do you have any favorite memories from working on it?

"It’s hard not to have fun making a video when you've got a choir, marching band, and are rolling around making a mess in an RV. Shooting it in Austin made it feel especially right. My favorite video I've made to date for sure!"

‘Good Morning’ was also recently featured in a Pepsi commercial during the Oscars. How did it feel to know the song was already getting so much attention?

"It was such a blessing especially because I feel like the commercial fits the song so perfectly. Sometimes songs feel forced in commercials but this felt like a perfect match."

This summer you will be releasing your first full length album – what can we expect from it?

"I'm calling the album Gold Rush because it marks my move to LA and my creative evolution into this new sound. It's all songs that are episodic in moments of my life over the past few years. Its unfiltered and in your face story telling with gritty production but pop relief."

We also heard that you have upcoming projects coming later this year with Elton John, DJ Mustard, and Whethan – can you give us any insight on these projects?

"All I can say at this time is that Elton John is a total legend and so easy to work with and down to earth despite his legendary status. Whatever happens with the song is peripheral to the experience of getting to work with him which is one of the honors of my life."

Aside from those projects and the album, is there anything else we can expect from you? Any shows?

"Over the past few years I've developed what a one-man show when I tour. The stage is set up like some sort of spaceship of instruments where I travel around and give the audience some insight into how these tracks come together while still delivering a performance. It’s something like a juggling fire act meets a rock show."
