Alternative band, Polaroid Summer, wants to talk about a taboo topic; substance abuse. They capture their message in their new music video for their single, “TIDES”. This song represents the struggle that people of all races, religions, and economic backgrounds go through, and is something that is greatly affecting the youth of today. Their hope is that this song will help others through their internal struggles making them aware that they are not alone and to encourage them to open up and talk to someone. Find out more about Polaroid Summer in our interview with vocalist Micaiah Walker below.

How would you describe your music to those who have not heard it yet?

Micaiah: "A combination of Energy, Power, Fun & Emotion J or I guess you could also say Alternative / Pop / New Wave."

You recently released your song ‘TIDES’, which is about struggles of anxiety, addiction, depression, etc. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the song?

Micaiah: "Our Drummer (Brian Barrett) and Guitarist (Trace Sisson) sent me this new piece of music they had been working on and from the first time I heard it I felt a strong feeling of Self-conflict and I started writing immediately. For me personally its just dealing with the stress related pressure of trying to make it in a nearly impossible industry and feeling like I had gotten away from giving it my all. Getting a little older each year, being broke, and not just financially, my spirit was broken… that’s depressing. That’s where I was. Depressed. The band (VerseCity) which I had poured my teenage years & early twenties into was falling apart. I had this brand new opportunity with this new group of guys as we were starting Polaroid Summer (14 months ago). I knew if I was going to do this I had to “Get it back”.  I left the lyrics vague enough to be relatable to anyone’s struggles and the Video portrays a few things we fell like people struggle with the most. We want this song to inspire inward change; just as writing it did for me."

Why do you think it’s important to talk about these struggles?

Micaiah: "Yes! The first step is realizing & admitting you have an issue. Then and only then can you start taking steps to make a change. That is what the song was for me, admitting to myself that I needed to change."

You also released a music video for the song – how did you make sure that the video conveyed the emotions well?

Micaiah: "We worked with Director Angelica Duong and another creator Arief Stark on the video concept and they were amazing to help us really bring these struggles to life in such a short video. My wife Suzie gave me the idea for the geometrical animal mask and then in the video when the mask are on it represents that the person is struggling with their addiction/depression etc. The four Modles/Actors we got for the video also did an amazing job bringing the roles to life. The video was a big team effort!"

Where do you find most inspiration when creating music?

Micaiah: "We write mostly in-group sessions as a band and some including our producer Bryce Bordone. Typically we like to find a chord progression & beat that feels good and then the melodies start flowing over it, once I get a general concept for a song then I start pulling from personal experience or something I saw on a TV show to get down lyrics. I’ll never tell what exactly but I often write about stuff I see on some of the great TV Shows that everyone knows and watches."

What do you hope people take from your music when they listen to it?

Micaiah: "My favorite songs are the ones that are very relatable and make me feel something more than just the beat. So for me the goal is to create songs that not only sounds good but also affects your emotions in a way that creates a feeling."

Is there anything else we can expect from you in the near future?

Micaiah: "We just celebrated One year as a band and now we are gearing up to release our First EP this Summer (2018) and it will likely feature 8 songs J."

How has Florida been treating you so far?

Luke: Florida’s good!
Coleman: I wish it was hotter.

The last time we talked was right before the album came out, how has it been doing since then?

L: Wow that seems like so long ago. It’s been good.

C: The feedback has been great. We’ve only gotten one bad review. They said that the album was awesome, but Pogs & Slammers was a massive fumble and could have been left off the album.

That’s my favorite song!

C: Yeah, I don’t think he got that it was kind of a joke in a way.

When did you guys get into music and realize that it was what you wanted to do?

L: I was a teen. I was making movies, but I realized that it took too many people to make a film. Then I discovered keyboards, and drum machines, and that you could build a whole track by yourself in your bedroom. I’ve just been doing that ever since.

C: I think I always loved music, but one time I was listening to Californication and drumming on my chest and I was like I want to get into music. I remember that that was the first time I thought that. I also joined a band when I was 15 as a drummer.

What have you guys been listening to on the road? Any particular artist or albums?

C: Caroline Rose

L: Caroline Rose is awesome.

C: She’s the shit. Our drummer knows her through some third party connection.

L: Yeah, she’s somewhat new. Burgeoning.

How did you have the idea for the Haunted House Party instead of a regular tour?

C: It initially came from a dream and it kind of just fell together. This will be our 5th national tour and we’ve done a lot of the same songs the same way. I didn’t want us to feel like a Coast Modern cover band, so we just wanted to change it up. It’s about the spirit of the tour being chaotic and changing. Like tonight we’re going to play a song that we came up with today. As it progresses and we get more and more comfortable we’ll push the boundaries farther and farther.

L: The idea is to have the whole night feel like something instead of coming to wait and then watching a band. It’s like this is a whole event. That’s why we have the fan talent show.

How has that been going?

L: It’s been amazing.

What are some of the coolest talents that you guys have seen?

C: Last night there was a baby…

L: A really realistic crying baby sound.

C: I’ve liked some of the Avant Gard dance.

L: There was a spoken word version of Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri, like a really dramatic reading. People were like snapping.

What has been the most memorable show of tour so far?

C: It’s been great every night. Especially because of all the bands that we’ve brought out with us. Netherfriends and The Technicolors tonight are both super awesome. Dallas was cool.

L: Dallas was great. One of the bigger shows we’ve done on our own. It was in a place that has like trees… It’s called Trees. They covered the columns with tree bark.

Anything else coming up on your agenda?

L: Just working on music.

C: Yeah. July is going to be a big month for us.

'THUNDERBOLT' / SAXON: ALBUM REVIEW

BY JAMIE LANGLEY

th-4697208260-712x712.jpg

If you haven’t heard of Saxon yet, I hope after reading this that you’ll have the nerve to check them out. Saxon are a pounding heavy metal band hailing from the depths of South Yorkshire, UK and they have been hastily making a name for themselves for over 41 legendary years now. Among other things, they been referred to as one of the most iconic metal acts of their time, influencing many of the other big-name metal lords. If you happen to be lucky enough to stand amongst them at their show, you’ll experience a powerhouse of emotion and sheer artistry.

Their brand new, gripping album, titled “Thunderbolt”, is fast to strike you with crazy fast-paced riffs, echoing vocals and menacing solos performed by uber-talented musicians. This new work brings back the raw electricity of metal from years before, hard and pressing, searching for a soul to rock and possess. If you don’t classify yourself a metal head but you catch yourself head banging to this record, don’t be surprised or alarmed, it’s bound to happen.

You can hear barbaric growls and grunts throughout this masterpiece bound with heavy hitting guitars and punishing drums. This would be a hard record to sit down and compare to other coveted acts, it basically stands alone in its awe. Not only did “Thunderbolt” rank in the Billboard charts the very first week it was released, the band also announced that they would be embarking on a two part, two county tour with legends like Judas Priest, Black Star Riders, Diamond Head and Rock Goddess.

If you have gazed upon any of the visuals for the band’s new album, you’ll see gritty and grungy imagery, working perfectly with their sound. My personal favorite is the video for “Nosferatu, The Vampire’s Waltz”, it brings you classic graphics of old lore and gore, embracing the music it resides by. You really never can be disappointed by heavy metal and the visuals or sounds being produced through the ages, it seems that heavy metal is difficult to corrupt.

When listening to the full album, one can truly appreciate Saxon’s lead singer Biff Byford’s ever present sound that is seemingly never wavering, not even for a split second. Classic heavy metal has never been more blistering and long withstanding than with the likes of Saxon, I believe. If you were to give this record a solid listen and tune into the underworld of tunes they bring, I would recommend these select songs of the record, as I feel they served the heaviest punch of all:

1) Nosferatu, The Vampire’s Waltz (of course, how could I not?!)

2) Predator (it’s hard hitting to the max)

3) Speed Merchants (very high paced and satisfying to any ear)
