Chris Santos, or more commonly known as Painted Young, has recently released his first-ever EP titled I’m Not Gonna Wait. The lead single, called “The Madhouse,” is one of the darker songs he has written, detailing struggles with mental health, including his own. Painted Young is definitely not an artist you’re going to want to miss out on!

You recently released the lead single “The Madhouse” off your EP, I’m Not Gonna Wait. Can you tell us a little about the song and how it came about?

“I think a lot of people would say ‘The Madhouse’ is my hardest-hitting song. It’s definitely a lot darker and a bit heavier than the typical music I’m used to writing. I’ve never really written a song about my struggles with mental health before, so that was the main inspiration behind it. I see the song as a chaotic and frustrated call for help. The depictions of being stuck in a mental asylum are basically a metaphor or hyperbole of my frustrations about dealing with my own struggles.”

Why did you choose “The Madhouse” to be the first single off the EP?

“Out of all the songs on the EP, this one was definitely the stronger contender. It had the energy and character needed to introduce people to the new chapter of Painted Young, while getting them excited too.”

What was the process like creating I’m Not Gonna Wait?

“Throughout the whole process, I’d say I felt a sense of freedom. It’s my first project as a solo artist and I had a lot of creative freedom to do things the way I wanted to. Also, it’s been 4 years since my first EP with my former bandmates, so writing, recording, and playing new music feels like escaping this form of purgatory.”

How would you describe the EP in three words?

“Diverse. Me. LONG-overdue...”

Of the songs on the EP, which one would you say represents you best as an artist and why?

‘I think the one that best represents me is ‘Needle in a Haystack.’ It’s a fun rock song that people can jump and nod their heads to, but it also has some pop grooves that people can really dance to. I’ve always been a sucker for pop rock and pop punk, so I think that song really describes me. Or maybe ‘The Madhouse’ just because I’m a bit crazy.”

ALEXANDRA RAE: INTERVIEW

INTRO BY AMANDA SIGMAN

INTERVIEW BY CAMI LIBERTY

Alexandra Rae, Power to Me EP cover art.jpg

Combine a powerful soul-pop sound, inspiring coming-of-age stories, and an independent, punchy attitude and you’ve described Alexandra Rae. Alexandra hit the LA artist scene at the young age of 21, when she decided the city of her dreams was calling her. Since then, she’s released numerous singles and EPs, including her most recent work, Power to Me, an EP packed full of life inspired stories perfectly fused with a heavy pop-rock sound. Alexandra seeks to pour her heart and soul into each and every piece, constantly finding ways to beautifully capture her unique vibe that listeners can’t help but fall in love with. We had the pleasure of sitting down with the charming Alexandra to talk about her roots, inspiration, and music aspirations. Read all about Alexandra Rae below!

For those who don’t know about you yet, what would you tell them about yourself and your music as a bit of an introduction?

AR: “If you don’t know me, my name is Alex and I am from Garland, Texas!  I have the MOST beautiful boyfriend named Kurt Doss and we like to eat food, watch Monk and travel. I started singing when I was 2 years old. Yes, on a stage.

My first real performance was when I was 8 at a Christmas concert. I sang “I Wanna Hippopotamus For Christmas” and it was so fun!

I went to college for film in Texas at Baylor University and then left to move to LA. I couldn’t not be here anymore.

When I got here I hit the ground running taking different acting classes which led me to meet my amazing producer, Scott Bennett and a good friend of mine who helped work on the album, Tom Wardle.

I’ve always written music for fun but when I started working on it with the full shebang, I realized a lot about my voice and my strength and weaknesses as a musician and a person!

I’m constantly learning more about myself and ways to implement me into my music through not only my voice but also the instruments, the vibe, and even the production to make it as enjoyable as possible for the audience that chooses to listen.”

You recently released your EP titled Power to Me. How would you describe the overall vibe of it?

AR: “It’s definitely a vintage upbeat vibe. However, there’s a rather emotional song on there too. I want to bring Motown back but in a pop rock type way. I like to call it a modern nostalgic sound.”

What song would you say was the hardest to create on the EP? Or did they all come easily?

AR: “Power to Me was a long one. It was fun, but it took a lot of shuffling instruments around, adding and removing guitars, experimenting with sounds and with the writing this one was definitely the one I was the most stuck on. I just wasn’t satisfied and then I was.”

What inspires you while writing music?

AR: “Life, man. Movies, my friends, my family, colors, paintings, of course my feelings, and prominently my imagination.”

What do you hope people take from your music when listening?

AR: “This album specifically, I hope they don’t feel alone. It’s a coming of age album of sorts. It’s about not fitting in on purpose and accepting feelings, good and bad, then growing from them.”

Is there anything else we can expect from you in the near future?

AR: “Absolutely. More music, films and art. I love to create and I’ll spend my life doing so.”

GREG HOLDEN: INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW BY CAMI LIBERTY

Through music, genius and empathetic Greg Holden sends his messages in the form of his songs such as “The Lost Boy”, “Boys in The Street”, and “Nothing Changes”, all in the ways of expressing much needed empowerment for listeners. Nevertheless, the music Holden creates is all regarding much vulnerable topics, with the liberating process of putting all cards on the table, acknowledging the heartlines of our society. Greg Holden’s new album World War Me highlights Holden as an artist in his whole and his intentions of purpose-driven music. The genuine empathy shines through his music and is evidently demonstrated through Greg Holden’s music, and showcases especially within the new album, World War Me.

You recently released your latest album World War Me. What was the journey like creating this album?

GREG: “Long and arduous, but educational and empowering. I recorded the album myself, which is the first time I’ve done that on this sort of scale. It was a very liberating process, and I’m proud of the results.”

How would you describe the album in three words?

GREG: “Empowered, vulnerable and curious.”

The lead single off the record was “I’m Not Your Enemy.” Can you tell us a little about this song and why you chose it to be the lead single?

GREG: “I wrote this song with my good friend Garrison Starr, the morning after the night Donald Trump was elected. We were on tour in Germany together, and myself as an immigrant in America, and Garrison a lesbian, we both felt pretty shunned by the “majority” of the US. We wrote that song as sort of a peace offering. We thought about writing the fuck you song, but thought coming at it from a less angry point of view would be more powerful, and more necessary at that time of intense contention and conflict.”

Where do you find most inspiration when creating music?

GREG: “Books, newspapers, things I notice in the world really. I tend to draw inspiration from things that upset or anger me, if you can’t tell already from my songs. I rarely write the typical singer-songwriter love songs, as they don’t inspire me.”

Of the songs on World War Me, which one would you say best represents you as an artist and why?

GREG: “Probably ‘Nothing Changes’. It’s the most vulnerable on the album, and because of that I think it’s the most genuine.”

You are also currently on tour! What are you most looking forward to on this run of shows?

GREG: “Seeing my fans again and hearing their voices.”
