KITTEN: INTERVIEW

BY CHELSEY JOHNSTONE

From 2009 to the present time, the band Kitten has been evolving musically for just about an entire decade. With the release of their newest EP, Goodbye Honeymoon Phase, along with front woman Chloe Chaidez’s collaboration with electro-pop artist Charlie XCX on a new side project, Kitten has been exploring new musical territories across a large spectrum.

Over the past years, Kitten has taken on different identities. Since its beginning, the group has explored multiple genres such as new wave, synth-pop, alternative rock, and pop punk. However, through all extensions of sound this band has musically explored, Kitten is still striving for more.

According to Chaidez, who has been spearheading the group since its beginning, 2019 has become another period for more musical exploration. She states, “I actually feel a similar way about the EP that I just released, Goodbye Honeymoon Phase, to how I felt when I made the Cut it Out EP, in the sense that it felt extremely fresh to myself as an artist. I was diving into new territory I’ve never gone before.”

Kitten has now once again taken a leap into another switch in sound; this time, in a genre only Chaidez can describe herself. “It’s like I want to be Michelle Branch on Pluto with a Mick Jagger haircut. That’s what it is,” she says. To put into context that concept, Chaidez says, “I think we’re inspired by a lot of experimental pop and we also have very classic influences in terms of rock. So I think that makes for some really interesting sounds.”

She continues, “We were getting really inspired by the early 2000s... kind of that ‘let’s go to the mall’ aesthetic. That’s the direction I’m headed in for sure. That’s the space I’m in now. It’s an elaboration but I think it’s a lot different.”

To help guide their path along this new direction of music, the group is constantly merging the vibes of various artists to form combinations of sound that are uniquely their own. With inspiration from artists such as Annie Lennox, Good Charlotte, No Doubt, The Police, Paramore and much more, Chaidez, along with her group, has concocted a taste of their own musical influence within their latest EP Goodbye Honeymoon Phase.

The key to piecing this album together, according to Chaidez, is to have a heightened focus on feeling, rather than forced sound. She states, “I think lyrically it’s a real stream of consciousness. There wasn't a lot of thought put into any of the lyrics or the concept behind them because I think that’s how my mind is. Pretty scattered honestly.”

She continues, “Melodies are almost like a spiritual thing because you don’t really know where they’re coming from. So I think the words that you’re putting to melodies just happen sometimes; there’s no rhyme or reason to it. And that’s the beauty of writing.”

Although there was no science behind piecing together the music of this newest EP, Chaidez still holds strong to the belief this scattered form of music can connect to her audience.

“You know, one moment I’m thinking about a spicy tuna roll and the next moment I’m worried that my best friend hasn’t texted back. I think that’s a very relatable concept because, man, none of us can get our shit together,” she says.

Ironically, with music representing the fact none of us have our shit together, Chaidez in particular seems to be getting her ducks in a row this year. Amongst the variety of attention Kitten has received from their newest EP, Chaidez has also joined the band Nasty Cherry, put together by pop artist Charli XCX, as the lead guitarist. The group released its first single, “Win”, in March of this year and quickly worked their way up to a Netflix Original Series documenting the bands growth that premiered this November 15th.

“Charlie XCX put Nasty Cherry together and curated the band. I think working with her and those girls is really inspiring. I mean, she sprints towards her ideas like an Olympic runner,” says Chaidez. The all-girl, female empowerment band was created in hopes of giving all women inspiration to succeed in anything they aim to accomplish. Chaidez says, “(Charlie XCX) taught me not to really think about anything and just do it. Nike. Aye.”

Between her long-running group Kitten and her newest involvement in the band Nasty Cherry, Chaidez is taking shows no signs of slowing down within the music field. She states, “I’ve never explored this zone that I’m in right now. I think I found kind of more of an identity and I feel a little bit more mature to translate what I am thinking into music.”

'I PROMISE, I'M LYING' / POLLYANNA: SINGLE REVIEW

NJ-based trio Pollyanna is back with “I Promise, I’m Lying”, and it’s the perfect addition of pop-infused, upbeat goodness to the band’s catalogue.

While the lyrical content of the song is about feeling insecure in a relationship, the instrumentals directly contradict that; their complexity and positivity show that the band isn’t afraid to make light of their own material and approach it from all sides.

It’s this irony that makes the track so versatile and keeps listeners interested in the subject matter. Lyrics about insecurity and jealousy often don’t ring true to audiences unless they feel they can relate to it, and “I Promise, I’m Lying” blends these heavy themes with unavoidable groove and creativity.

The eccentric, Paramore-like music video gives the tune another avenue through which to shine, and it’s just another example of Pollyanna’s ability to coordinate their sounds with their visuals. With splashes of bright color and in-your-face angles, the confidence of the band is growing, and their fan base is growing, too.

Pollyanna hits the road on Dec. 1st in Florida, and their upcoming shows are sure to show their growth and newfound style.

DIRTY HONEY: INTERVIEW

BY BRE CURA

Dirty Honey is one of the coolest rock bands on the scene right now. Based out of Los Angeles, Dirty Honey has been creating rock ‘n’ roll music together for two years now, and recently just wrapped up playing across America with Alter Bridge and Skillet. Combining vintage vibes with a modern style, Dirty Honey stands out in the crowd with a refreshing and captivating sound. We got to chat with guitarist John Notto about some of his recent undertakings with the band, and their experience touring!

You guys just put an EP out earlier this year, what was that experience like?

John:We did! Self-titled. It was a lot of hard work. We traveled to Australia to record it, which was like a paradise retreat, just because of what Australia is like. It was really great working with the producer, did it really quickly in twelve days. Albums have been made in less time I suppose, but we actually finished writing some of the songs in the studio. Some of the songs had never been performed live.”

Of all of the songs on the EP, did you guys expect “When I’m Gone” to be the one that took off the most?

John: “That was the one that we had finished ahead of time, so it was the logical choice. But no, I don’t think we all did necessarily. And then of course Rolling Sevens came together in the studio, and kind of bumped some other songs off.”

So you guys just put out a music video for “When I’m Gone” as well, what can you tell us about that?

John: “It was really cool! The style of the video is pretty much one camera shot. So it really was not too grueling in terms of filming. We shot it at a club that we have played a lot in Santa Monica, and it kind of mirrored how it was playing there. It was kind of wild, and there was kind of nobody there, haha. It was sort of paying homage to our beginning, with a little bit of fictionalism in there.”

What's it been like bringing an older rock sound into today's modern music scene?

John: “It’s been a surprise I think, for me personally. We’ve played in dive bars in LA, and Mark and I have played together before this band. Just cover bands and stuff, playing classic rock, and you still see people react to them. But then you kind of see this disconnect with popular music where no one is doing it (modern rock). The fact that we’re part of that wave, it's a dream come true.”

It was so refreshing to listen to you guys, and hear a newer but older sound, if that makes sense?

John: “Yeah! Thank you! I think that's how we want to be perceived too, not just a straight up throwback. We do feel what we’re doing, it’s not just an impression of other music.”

What have you found to be the most exciting part of touring?

John: “Well, the most exciting part has been the shows, the response to the shows and meeting all the fans at merch. There’s been some highlights too, we got to open for The Who which was great. Playing The Ryman with Slash was amazing. A lot of firsts like radio performances. And now the next exciting thing is going to be opening for Guns N’ Roses! That’s bucket list really.”

Can we expect any new songs from you guys to drop soon?

John: “We are going to go into the studio at some point next year for sure. We’re all itching to get out these new ideas. But right now all of our shows are opening spots, we really only have thirty minutes anywhere we play. We don’t really get a chance to workshop any new ideas live, yet. So anything new is still secret haha.”

GRAY: INTERVIEW

BY BRE CURA

A couple months ago Unclear Mag was able to talk to gray about his newest single ‘Swoon’, so we figured we better follow up now that it’s almost time for his debut album to drop! H(our)s is set to come out October 29th, and we cannot wait to hear what gray has created. With influences like Coldplay, John Mayer, The Band CAMINO and Ben Rector, gray’s songwriting skills have been on display since his first Spotify release back in 2017.

We asked gray what he could tell us about H(our)s, to which he responded, “It’s exciting! It’s really honest. Songwriting for me is a way to process through my thoughts and feelings, so this album is a piece of me, in many ways. This album will have twelve songs — very intentionally. It tells the story of my life growing up — the things I’ve experienced so far. Falling in love with my best friend. It’s out October 29th, and I can’t wait for you all to hear it!” gray also mentioned to us that time was the central theme for all of these songs. He says, “This album, in some ways, is a series of the things I’ve experienced in life so far that have shaped me the most.” Crediting time itself as the most challenging aspect of putting the album together, gray told us that having the right people on this project was very important to him.

While some people might be nervous about releasing a debut album, gray is simply excited for people to experience so much of what he has been through! We asked if he had any favorite tracks on the album, and he told us, “It changes. Probably ‘Grown,’ right now. The imagery in that song speaks so much to the pain of growth. The idea of leaving a paper castle to storm one made of stone hits me hard. I’ve had to go through that pain a lot lately. The pain of leaving something that is less than you believed it was to fight for something you don’t think you can win… been there. This song has the reminder that we do not have to go through these things alone, nor are we meant to.” gray’s vulnerability and versatility as a songwriter has created this ability to put the human experience into poetically crafted three minute escapes back into reality. As his early song ‘October’ states, “it’s in joy when it needs no disguise” — simply meaning that some of the best parts of life can be found in the simplest truths.

Listeners will be able to access H(our)s on all music streaming platforms, and can stay updated on gray’s release by heading over to his website (www.musicofgray.com) or by following him on social media (@musicofgray).
