Who could be more lovely than Marc Ambrosia? At just 18, Marc released his first EP. Now at 22, he has released his new single Let Me Be Your Secret. Be sure to keep Marc Ambrosia on your music radar, he will definitely be on ours as well.

For those who don’t know you, can you tell us a little about yourself?

MARC: "My name is Marc Ambrosia and I’m a songwriter. I've been singing all my life. From a very young age, I realized music held my revolving world of emotions tightly in it’s grasp. I'm a huge Fleetwood Mac fan, a dark chocolate addict, a hopeless romantic, and a stubborn optimist."

When did you realize you wanted to get into music?

MARC: "I always knew I wanted to make music one day. All I ever had to do for fun growing up was turn on a radio and I would just sit there mesmerized. It didn't take long before I was learning all the words to different songs and singing them in my bedroom, loud as can be in an effort to hone my vocal skills. At fifteen years old, I started writing songs and I haven't stopped since. Of course I didn't really write anything decent until I was about eighteen, but the songwriter’s  learning curve isn't always the most swift experience. At eighteen, I released my first EP; at twenty, I released my first album, and now at twenty two, I feel as though I've truly stepped into my own as an artist and am releasing the best material I've ever recorded."

Were there any people or things that influenced your interest?

MARC: "There's a wonderful artist out of Portland named Mree. Her music has such an ethereal quality to it and is so soothing yet so powerful all at once. Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls has also had a huge influence on me. There's so many songs of her’s that make me ball my eyes out, most notably, “Love Will Come to You.” Vocally, my biggest influence would have to be k.d. Lang. Nobody sings like her, she never misses the mark. If years from now I can be considered just a fraction of the vocalist she is, then I will have felt like I have conquered the world! Other great influences include Alicia Keys, Stevie Nicks, John Legend, and then of course there's Jamie Myerson, who is my co-producer. Musically, we have so much in common in terms of taste and ideas. He's a trusted sounding board, the best collaborator, and the most magnificent person."

What do you think makes your music unique in comparison to others?

MARC: "I try very hard not to fit into any particular box musically. I come from a vast musical background and I like to incorporate all of my interests and musical tastes into my songs. When I first started singing, I performed gospel music, from gospel I transitioned into performing in a rock cover band (which was pretty dreadful seeing as I was a budding songwriter who wanted to craft original songs, but none of my band mates were interested!) After I quit the band, I moved onto an all acoustic project with another singer-songwriter. Now, I've finally gotten to a point where I can bring all those experiences into a project all my own. From a writing standpoint, I can write rock songs naturally, but pop songs flow out of me more frequently. Vocally, my bluesy gospel roots always seem to kick in and I wind up delivering a pop song with a soulful delivery as a result. I see my music as an artful melting pot of pop, soul, and R&B."

How would you describe your music in three words?

MARC: "My little world."

Where do you get the majority of the inspiration for your songs from?

MARC: "Inspiration is all around. On my last record, a lot of my inspiration came from stepping into adulthood and holding onto dreams. With this new batch of songs, I'm digging deeper into my love life. As a result, there's plenty of heartache in the new material, but there's also a lot of romance. Generally when I write, I write from my own life experiences. So all of that heartache and all of that romance comes from a very real place. If you really listen to my lyrics, you know me through the songs."

What was it like when you released your first song to the public? Did you have any idea it would lead to a career like this?

MARC: "The first song I ever released to the public was a co-write with a former collaborator, Shane Rojas. The name of the song was “Never That Easy.” It’s not a song I play much anymore, and it's not something I consider to be my best work, but I was only sixteen or so when it came out so of course, it felt like a huge milestone to have an original song out there for the world to hear. I knew that I'd release more music as time went on, so the goal was indeed to have a career like this. My only hope now is that my career continues to stretch out far and wide so that people from all over the world can find room in their hearts for my songs, that's all I've ever wanted."

Can you tell us about your new single Let Me Be Your Secret?

MARC: "I think 'Let Me Be Your Secret' is one of the catchiest songs I've ever written. It’s one of those songs where I woke up in the middle of a dead sleep, went downstairs, and wrote the song in about ten minutes. I love writing songs like that. It's a song with a lot of longing in it. There's the whole idea of forbidden love and loving someone despite consequences or ridicule. I like to think that if nothing else, people will take away from this song that they are never wrong to love someone. There's also the idea of people cherishing their secrets more than anything else in the world. So if you can find someone who loves you as much as they love their own secrets, you've maybe found something worth exploring? There's been many times where I've met someone and have thought in the back of my mind, 'please, let me be your secret.' When that happens, that's usually how I know I've fallen pretty hard for someone."

Is there anything we can expect from you in the near future?

MARC: "Well, there's lots of new music to come! When I went back in the studio last year, I had intended on making another full length album. After a few sessions though, I had quickly realized that I had a very special pack of songs on my hands and they had to be treated very delicately. When you put out a full length record, that leaves a lot of room for songs to sort of fall through the cracks and never really get heard. So I knew if I wanted every song to get the attention they deserve the best thing to do would be releasing each song individually as singles. “Let Me Be Your Secret” marks the first single release. The next single will most likely come out in the fall and then every three or four months another song will go out. Also, I'll be shooting a music video this summer for “Let Me Be Your Secret.” It'll be my first music video ever and I couldn't be more excited!"

With his ninth record, Gotta Get Back, Seth Walker knows a thing or two about what he is doing, and it definitely shows in his music and personality. We got to speak with him about the process of making Gotta Get Back and more! Read along to find out what he said and make sure to catch him LIVE in a city near you!

How would you describe your music in your own words?

SETH: "Americana, blues and southern roots music. It's definitely a culmination of many musical styles, cities and experiences."

Can you tell us the process on creating your most recent album Gotta Get Back?

SETH: "It started on a longgg drive through Florida with my producer Jano Rix. We brainstormed, collaborated and inspired each other to join forces for this album. It was a great balance of styles and ideas that seemed effortless, in sync and sympatico. Thematically it is an ode to getting back to why I started playing music in the first place. Sometimes when you do something long enough, that can get murky. I had to literally get back to the source, which included collaborating with my family on this album. My father is a cellist and composer along with my mom and sister who are violinists. My father arranged all of the strings for this album and my mom and sister performed the music along with him for these sessions- a first for us! I wrote many of the songs while living in New Orleans, so it has much of that spirit and push-pull feel. It also has a gospel soul thread that ended up weaving throughout."

What song are you most proud of off the album?

SETH: "That's a tough one. I would say "Blow Wind Blow" because it is just myself and my family, stripped to the bone. It's also the first time we had performed together in over 20 years. Pretty special for me."

How did it feel for the album to debut at number six on Billboard’s Blues Album Chart?

SETH: "A very humbling and flattering feeling. We put all of ourselves into this, and it's always nice when people resonate with what you are putting down."

What would you say has been your biggest milestone so far in your career?

SETH: "Putting out Gotta Get Back, my 9th album and continuing to find a way (knock on wood) to keep reinventing myself and dancing with all of this."

What do you love most about performing?

SETH: "Connecting with people, myself and the mysterious muse. Plain and simple."

Is there anything we can expect from you in the future?

SETH: "A live record (my first), and I am also planning on trying some new things musically. Can't make the same record over and over again!"

JON MCLAUGHLIN: INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW BY CAMI LIBERTY

We spoke with the amazingly talented Jon McLaughlin recently about some new and exciting things! Before you go on and learn how great McLaughlin is, you should probably prepare yourself for the current tour he is on, The Indiana Tour! You can catch him in a city near you - tickets are still available for his show at World Café Live in Philadelphia tomorrow (April 28th) here!

What do you love most about performing live?

JON: “Oh, man. Everything. There are different aspects of being a musician – there’s the time in the studio, writing the songs, just traveling, all that kind of stuff. Playing live shows is by far my favorite. There’s nothing else like it – the rush of being onstage and creating something in real time that everyone is experiencing – when it’s working well and it’s a good night… I can’t even describe how awesome it is.”

What city has been your favorite to perform in on this tour?

JON: “All of the shows have been really great. It might have to be a tie between Seattle and Atlanta. Seattle was the first show, and the first show is always a little bit nerve-racking. Every time I go back out on the road I’d always sort of feel like it’s the first time I’ve ever done touring and playing shows. I don’t know why that is. You would think after 13, 14 years of doing this that the first show wouldn’t feel like the first show anymore, but it always does. It always feels like… I don’t even remember how this goes, but I sort of love that rush of – I like getting a little bit nervous. I like not having the show down pat yet and knowing the transitions and all that kind of stuff – I love that that used to be the kind of stuff that made me nervous in a bad way, and now it’s nervous in a good way.

And Atlanta was actually the last show I played, that was on Saturday. It was just a great night, the best show I’ve ever had in Atlanta. It just felt really good. But they’ve all been going really well. It’s been a really fun tour so far.”

What is your favorite song to perform live and why?

JON: “Well, it changes tour to tour. This tour I think it would be a song called Perfect. I added this five minute piano solo intro to that song, because at the end of this tour, a week after the Philly date, I’ll be playing a hometown show with a full orchestra. So I’ve been practicing this little intro in this song. I love it because it’s hard, really challenging for me as a player, but I like that on stage. Its gone well the past couple times, it’s a crowd-pleaser. That’s become my favorite one because it’s really challenging for me to pull it off.”

What would you say has been your biggest milestone so far in your career?

JON: “I think this next weekend in my hometown – that will feel like a milestone to me. It’s going to be a really special night. We’re playing in this big theater downtown that I’ve been to a million times, but I’ve never played a show there and I haven’t played in my hometown in ten years. The last time I played there was right when my first record came out, and this is the ten year anniversary of my first record. So I think to go back to my hometown and play in a packed out theater with a full orchestra, that’s going to feel like a milestone to me. Definitely going to be a night that I’m never going to forget.”

Out of all of your albums, which is your favorite and why?

JON: “I have two kids, it’s like picking your favorite of your kids. It’s tough. I think each album that I have put out, to me, they’re so different, but me being the artist who’s putting these records out, I feel like I’m evolving as an artist. I feel like I’m getting better at what I do, as anyone should be who’s doing the same thing for 10, 12, 15 years – you’d hope that you’re getting better and not making the same mistakes. So I would say I’d have to pick my last record called Like Us. I think that would be my favorite. I went back to LA and recorded… I’m just really proud of that record, I’m proud of the songs on it, and it’s a really kind of personal record. In terms of style, you know, I play everything from piano, to organ, to guitar, to ukulele, to banjo, to drums – so I was really proud of that record.”

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would you choose and why?

JON: “There are a lot of places. I’ve been on a lot of tours supporting bigger artists, so I’ve gotten to play at some amazing theaters, arenas, stuff like that. I think that I would maybe say playing a show at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. I played there a long time ago with Kelly Clarkson, she did three nights in a row at the Beacon Theatre, and it’s a beautiful theater in Manhattan. It was amazing. I’ll never forget that place, so that would be on the list for sure.”

Is there anything we can expect from you in the near future?

JON: “I’m currently working on some Christmas stuff. I’m working on a new record and some Christmas stuff, but the Christmas stuff is kind of the main focus right now. I put out a Christmas EP a couple years ago and I loved it. It was kind of a jazz trio kind of vibe, which I love, and we did a tour on that, came through Philly. So I’m looking forward to doing that same thing this Christmas.”

'MAKE ME' / LUCKI STARR: SINGLE REVIEW

BY SARAH KEARNS

After achieving widespread popularity for her videos on Musical.ly, Lucki Starr has taken her career to the next level. The 19-year-old singer-songwriter released her first single, Make Me, in early March.

The track’s cover art boasts bright teal and fuchsia lettering and a candid of Starr. It's distinct 80’s quality leaves the listener expecting tunes paralleling the style of Michael Jackson, but delivers something else entirely. Starr croons catchy verses in beat to a punchy background noise, simultaneously delivering her own unique sound and matching the edginess of the King of Pop himself.

Make Me is hard hitting, upbeat, and fun. Whether in the car or in the club, it's easy to groove to Starr’s voice as she divulges her boy problems.

“I don't wanna rush forever. See what it is cause. I'm down for whatever. If you're riding, you're riding. If you're not, then be off. Don't have the time for the back and forth.”

We’ve all been in that tough spot at one point or another. Lucki Starr gets it. The man can go, but Make Me has a permanent place in our playlists.
