LA-based band Ships Have Sailed recently released their latest single entitled "Let's Just Dance" along with a music video for the song (The song is incredible and we highly recommend it). Vocalist Will Carpenter explains that the track is about always wanting more no matter what you already have. We sat down with Will to learn more about the song, the music video, and what the band wants to do next.

You recently released your new single Let’s Just Dance. Can you describe how the song makes you feel in three words?

WILL: "Nostalgic, exuberant, hopeful."

You have also released a music video to go along with it, which features a group of teenagers fresh out of high school wanting to spend their last summer before college together. How did this concept come about?

WILL: "Throughout the process of creating the song and the video I've been embracing the contributions of the collaborators I've had the pleasure of working with.  When I reached out to Michael and Jaala (TalkboyTV) about shooting the video, I think I did have a rough concept that I pitched them, but honestly I don't even remember what it was. They listened to the song, and sent back an incredible narrative treatment that spoke instantly to what the song was about, but from a completely different angle than what I had originally imagined. The imagery and the emotive moments that they created were so potent that I immediately was drawn to the idea, and so that's the direction we went. I honestly couldn't be happier with how the video turned out!"

Where did the initial inspiration for the song come from?

WILL: "Well the first part of the chorus just popped into my head one night around 2am when I was trying to sleep. The idea was just kinda repeating itself over and over and I couldn't sleep, so I went into the studio and sketched it out enough so my mind would let it go and I could get some rest...I revisited it the next day and realized the idea was really good, so I fleshed out the chorus. When I got to the verses though, I kept kind of coming up short, so I decided to bring in a friend who also happens to be a great songwriter, his name is Robert Gillies, and we just started chatting...next thing we knew the verses were done! It was a really cool process actually, the song started out a little vapid, just a hooky love song initially, and as we continued to create it we realized there was a depth there that was a little unexpected, and it's just kept growing on me ever since!"

What do you hope people take from your music when they listen?

WILL: "Positivity and hope above anything else. I think the world needs as much positive energy as it can get...both in general and also in this specific time we're living through, and so I like to encapsulate that in our music. That's not to say we don't have some melancholy stuff as well, because we definitely do, but I like to temper the melancholy with hope, because without hope, what do you really have?"

Is there anything else coming up in the future that we can expect?

WILL: "We will largely be sticking close to the studio this year, and just trying to create.  We aren't sure at this point whether we're creating just more songs, or maybe an EP or album...I kinda like to let things materialize naturally, but there is definitely more music on the horizon, whatever form that takes!"

Houston, Texas based band Vodi is bringing a new twist on music from the 70's and 80's with a more modern indie sound. Vodi consists of members Tom Lynch (vocals, guitarist), Haley Lynch (guitarist, background vocals), David Lascoe (keyboard), Austin Sepulvado (keyboard), E. Marshall Graves (bassist), Tank Lisenbe (drummer, percussion), and Gus Alvarado (drummer, percussion). We interviewed the band to learn more about their debut album 'Talk', their music video for their song 'Pressure', and their upcoming performance at Bloom Music Festival plus much more!

When did you guys first come together to make the band and how did that come about?

"I don’t think there was really a moment. I was more over time. The drummer, Tank, and I started the project and to play live shows we needed more hands. So we got our friends to play. Then I met a ravishingly attractive, witty, razor sharp lady who went under the name Dollie Barnes and asked her to join the band. And then we got married. We haven’t had any kids yet and no mom it’s not going to happen any time soon, yes we plan on it, it’s just not the right time, what was the question?"

In your own words, how would you describe your music?

"It’s as if someone used instruments and voices to collectively make a focused sound, but not quite as good as Bruno Mars."

This past November you released your debut album, Talk. What was the process like creating it? Did you hit any bumps in the road at all or did everything go fairly smooth?

"Well, it was a long process. Like most bands we did it in a studio and I’d say it was rather smooth. Generally speaking, we are very amiable people. Except our bass player Marshall. He thinks the earth is flat but we keep him in the band because everyone is wrong from time to time. I actually don’t know if he thinks it’s flat but he likes to make people think he might think it is. I’ve researched it. It’s round."

You also just released your new music video for your song Pressure. Can you tell us a little about the video and how the concept came about?

"We had almost no budget and no dance moves, so we made the worst possible decision we could’ve and made a video of us dancing to the song. David our keyboard player, his face says 'I dance' but his body says 'I’m not quite sure we’ve practiced this before'."

In March you will be performing at the In Bloom Music Festival alongside artists Beck, Martin Garrix, Lil Uzi Vert, and more. Are you nervous at all?

"No, not nervous. Beck is a little nervous. He called me about his pants choices for the show, sequins, no sequins, what about my hair, etc. etc., none of that actually happened and I’m very excited about seeing Beck."

Are there any goals that you hope to achieve as a band?

"Get rich. And ripped. Rich and ripped is the goal. That way when we retire from music, we can start a fitness brand. But for now we’re focused on the music side of things."

Is there anything else that we can expect from you in the near future?

"Mostly more music and touring. We have a video for our single 'Talk' in the works as well, so keep your eyes peeled and thank you for the interview. You all are wonderful!"

G-EAZY: ON TOUR

After the release of his highly anticipated album in 2017, The Beautiful & Damned, G-Eazy now sets out on his U.S. tour for the recently released album. G-Eazy saw his rise after the release of his sophomore album When It’s Dark Out, and became a multi-platinum artist after his single with Bebe Rexha “Me, Myself, and I” reached platinum status seven times. G-Eazy continues his success after The Beautiful & Damned debuted at #3 on Billboard’s Top 200 Charts. The two lead singles “Him & I” featuring Halsey, and “No Limits” featuring Cardi B and A$AP Rocky are both currently charting and have nearly 200 million streams on Spotify.

The 20 date U.S. Tour kicks off in Houston, Texas, and closes out in New York before G-Eazy takes the tour international and brings his show to Europe in May. Trippie Redd, Phora, and Anthony Russo will be supporting G-Eazy on the U.S. Tour. Eazy has additionally teased that for select dates his girlfriend, and duet partner on “Him and I”, Halsey, will be making an appearance.

The set will likely focus heavily on the 20 song, 74 minute long, The Beautiful & Damned and the tour will reflect the same themes of duality that the album explores. The album is a commentary on the lifestyle of a celebrity. In an interview with ABC Radio, G-Eazy explains how “...beautiful this life can be but also the dark side that comes with excess and overindulgence, and just trying to maintain a strong sense of self and identity and core in a kind of chaotic word.” It’s been a long road to the top for Eazy himself; the artist was originally a record producer until he took the plunge into his own music career and worked himself out of house parties and clubs before finally headlining festivals and international arenas. Eazy’s tour is planned intentionally to hold the New York and LA dates later in the tour to ensure fans don’t know what to expect early on. While little is known about The Beautiful & Damned Tour, fans of G-Eazy are familiar with the show and spectacle Eazy is capable of, and this tour is not one to miss.

TRITONAL: INTERVIEW

BY KAT H. WENTZELL

Tritonal has become a legendary name in the world of electronic dance music.  The band is comprised of two talented Texas natives - Chad Cisneros and Dave Reed - and they have reaped much success since the formation of Tritonal in 2008.  The duo have over 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, over 2 million views on the YouTube video for their hit single “Untouchable,” and as of February 2018, have over 800k followers across all social media.  As if these achievements were not notable enough, Cisneros and Reed also own their own record label, Enhanced Music, with fellow DJ and friend Will Holland, and host their own popular weekly podcast titled Tritonia.  Even though all of these jobs require Cisneros and Reed to be working at least six days out of the week, they would not change a thing; music is their passion and the fans mean everything to them.

Can you talk a little bit about one of your most recent singles, “Call Me?”  (What is the Tritonal writing process like?  Where do you get inspiration for your music?  Is there an album coming soon?)

Cisneros: "Loaded question, love it!  'Call Me' was finished at the end of of last year, and represents to some degree our take on dance music at a much more dialed back tempo.  It is fun and catchy, [it has] feel good vibes, and [it is] quite easy to listen to.  Inspiration comes from being present in Life, [and] being in the Now.  Inspiration comes as an upwelling of joy when you are fully present in whatever you are doing.  Whether it’s taking a walk at sunset, running in the rain, or meditating quietly before bed - it comes by being the ever-present I AM in all of us.  [And in regards to] an album, absolutely!"

You recently released a record consisting completely of remixes of your hit song “Good Thing.”  What made you want to do so?

Cisneros: "Nothing 'made us' do anything, that's the great thing about owning our own label and being independent - we do what we want!  Ha!  That said, 'Good Thing' needed some variety on that vocal, because it’s so damn yummy!  My favorite remix is the Justin Caruso one, it’s hyped!"

What is Enhanced Music and why did you create it?  How do you juggle being owners of a label and performers at the same time?

Reed: "Enhanced Music is our own branded record label that we own alongside Will Holland, the initial owner of the label.  For sure, juggling running a label, performing, and writing music would ALL be way too hard, so we each divide out what needs to be done. [Cisneros] and I enjoy taking more of the A&R approach, doing our best to coach and lead upcoming artists [that could] potentially to be signed on the label, while Will takes the lead on many of the administrative aspects, which can be quite time consuming for us as artists.  It's all a really well oiled machine we have going and Enhanced is growing bigger and bigger by the day!"

What is the Tritonia podcast, when did you start it up, and why?

Reed: "The Tritonia podcast is a radio show we started very early on in our career as Tritonal.  It actually used to be called “Air Up There” in the early days.  We initially started it as a way to broadcast our material, support other musicians and artists, and filter through records we enjoyed playing live.  As the years went by, we did a complete revamp of the show to tie closer to our brand as 'Tritonal.'  Our shift was also happening in [our] music in the studio and what we enjoyed listening to.  [Our] main goal is to show what we love and [to] support other musicians, no matter the “likes.”  Today, the show is broadcasted in many countries on Sirius XM and online.  It's amazing to see how much it's grown, and we're so thankful for the support we've had over the last decade getting it to where it is now!"

What is the most rewarding thing about being in a band?

Reed: "I think there are plenty of rewarding things to think about when it comes to being in a band, both in-studio and most especially with stage presence.  The fact that there's two of us [means] we can play off each other's energy live and do things that one single person couldn't normally do.  In the studio, we can work on two different pieces of the record at the same time, focus on things differently, and shift when we need to.  It's great."

How has Tritonal changed over time?

Cisneros: "Well, our musical interests have grown and cross pollinated with other styles over the years.  It’s quite natural for creative people to want to create new things, I’d say.  Initially, we were hyper focused on records that were built for festivals and night clubs, and over the years we've slowly become more well-rounded producers.  We've been fortunate to experience songwriting sessions with different writers and artists, and [we] have switched up styles and tempos in order to keep things fresh in the studio.  One thing that feels consistent in every record we write is that emotional connectivity.  We do strive, regardless of style, to bring the feels!"

What is the best memory you two have together as Tritonal?

Cisneros: "The best memory for me happened this past year actually!  We sold out the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco, and had 10,000+ fans singing 'Untouchable' at the top of their lungs simultaneously!  [It] was incredible."

What are your plans for the new year?  Where do you see yourselves in the future?

Reed: "Lots of new music is definitely a must!  We've already written so many records, and [there are] some [soon-to-be-written songs] that we're excited to put out.  We've also put some considerable time into building a brand new professional studio here in Austin.  We're so thrilled to see where 2018 takes us in music, life, and growth."

Anything else?

Reed: "[Cisneros] and I are simply just so grateful and thankful to be where we are in life because of all the support we've received over the years.  We can't say enough how much we love our fans, how much we love hearing about their lives change because of music, and simply seeing their smiling faces glow at our shows!  We can't wait to SEE YOU this year!"

'THIS FEELING' / NATALIE SHAY: MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW

BY EMMA SCHOORS

Natalie Shay’s new music video for “This Feeling” has us all chasing after people and things we long for. The video seemingly consists of two main storylines. One, Natalie playing the song to a crowd, and the other being a boy chasing after butterflies around town. The song progresses to the lyrics of the song, as the boy struggles to catch up to the butterflies. Nearing the end of the video, the boy finally catches up to the butterflies with a twist; they were leading him to the girl he loves, and she happened to be in the crowd of Natalie’s show. The video goes to show the coincidences and desires for love we all experience. It’s a great reminder of our own unconscious efforts to succeed in relationships and go through with our instincts, all rolling into two stories that end up crossing paths.
